Selecting Your Style
No cruise line is the same so breaking them down into classifications is the best way nail down which cruise line is best matched with you.
Contemporary (Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Costa, MSC)
Premium (Princess, Holland America Line, Celebrity)
Premium Plus (Oceania, Azamara)
Luxury (Crystal Cruises, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas, Yachts of Seabourn, Sea Dream)
Niche/River (Disney, Viking River Cruises, Uniworld)
Knowing your style will help you in selecting the right cruise line to provide you the experience you desire on your getaway. To help our expert consultants determine the right fit, you’ll have a few questions to ask yourself a few questions.
The questions you need to ask yourself are:
- Who is traveling? (retired? family with children? honeymooners?)
- What do I want from this cruise? (serenity? exploring? socializing?)
- What type of room do I want?
- How much am I willing to spend?
- What kind of dining options do I want?
What should I pack?

Are you a young family getting away for spring break? You may want to ask our experts about the best cruise lines that has many activities to keep the kidlets busy and maybe a nice spot for mom and dad to just relax and slow down for a while.
If your dream vacation does not include the pitter-patter of little feet, you may want to mention this your consultant as there are cruise lines that offer adult only sailings
Do You Like to Dress Up?
Expand [+]
Mainstream cruise lines tend to have one or two formal nights on a seven-day cruise where passengers wear formal or semi-formal attire. On the formal nights, it is acceptable for men to wear tuxedos or a suit and tie combination and women tend to wear cocktail dresses. Should you not want to participate in formal nights, you may choose to spend the evening relaxing in your stateroom or may want to select a cruise line that has moved towards relaxed “resort/country club casual” dress nights. This means nice slacks and a collared shirt for men (no ties necessary) and no need for glitzy dresses for the ladies.
Dinner Seatings
Expand [+]
Although is varies a little between the cruise lines, generally there are 3 options for dinning: early seating (approx. 6:00 pm), late seating (approx. 8:00-8:30 pm) or open seating (anytime within a given time frame of 6:00-8:30 pm).
The reason to consider “how you like to eat” is due to most cruise lines using assigned seating. You will be asked what table size you prefer and will often be seated with others, which is great for getting to know your fellow travelers. There is the option of “table for two”, however, you may want to make arrangements with your agents or early on your trip as there may be a limited amount of private tables.
Selecting the Right Stateroom
Expand [+]
Cabin selection is where you are going to have to look seriously at how much you want to spend. Often new cruisers book an inside cabin with the thought that they will only use it to sleep and will save that money for shore excursions and shopping. Think carefully about this as your stateroom will be your home for the duration of your trip. If you have the slightest claustrophobia, you may need something with a window or verandah. Most of our return clients prefer to book a verandah room because what can be better than waking up to the world’s most beautiful coastlines?
If you are doing a one way Alaskan cruise or a coastal cruise, you may want to consider what side of the ship you will be on to better enjoy the views
If you are unsure of the category stateroom that would best suit your needs, ask our consultants for a deck plan for the ship you will be sailing.
When & Where do you want to Travel?
Expand [+]
Cruise prices are most definitely determined by supply and demand. A budget traveler may find deals to travel in the spring or fall, which is typically less in demand due to kids being in school and the possibility of uncertain weather.
When it comes to where you want to cruise, you will have to consider that some destinations have shorter seasons. Alaska and Northern Europe typically run between May and September.
The Caribbean and the tropics are popular choice as the temperature does not vary as much with the seasons. Although the weather does not change, they do experience a “rainy” season which is typically over the winter but does not necessarily mean you should expect rain every day. Let’s face it though, if you are coming from most parts of Canada of the U.S you’ll take warm rain over cold wind and snow any day!
As more cruise lines are sending ships to Europe and specifically the Mediterranean, you are lucky enough to be able to experience its charm practically year round. A word of warning: the summer is their high season and does books up fast so plan well ahead!
