Cruise Deals by CruisePlus

Trujillo, Peru was founded in 1534 with the intent to ally local tribes against the Incas. Destroyed in 1624 by an earth quake, redevelopment began that built the foundations of Trujillo’s modern city center. Trujillo is very much a thriving city that is known for its colourful colonial architecture, lush scenery, fresh seafood and famous beaches that stretch for miles! With an average temperature of 21oC during the winter and 300 days of sunshine per year there is no need to bring raincoats or umbrellas!

The major draw to Trujillo is the archaeological sites associated with the Moche (pronounced Mo-chay) and Chimu (pronounced Cheem-oo) civilizations. The nearby ruins of Chan Chan (In Mochica dialect: Janj-Janj, Sun-Sun) has been compared to many ancient cities in Egypt due to its sheer size and complexity. Remarkably, it is very well preserved and is definitely a must see. I’ve included some photos on the side for you to see for yourself!

Food wise yum yum yum! Food carts are a must for any foodie. While I do love food carts where-ever i go, please keep in mind they are at your own risk. If it doesn't look sanitary it probably isnt! If you have stomach problems or are prone to indigestion it is advised you stick to standard fares. Where ever you go within the city centers you can find traditional regional specialties or actually whatever you are looking for: pretty decent pizza, Mexican, Greek, Creole and Chinese. One note, even if you have an urge for pasta stay away from the Italian restaurants. Why you ask? You will pay a decent amount for a pile of goup. The local food is wonderful but it is very simple (e.g. spiced chicken and rice). If you have a chance I urge you to try a local specialty …yum yum…goat stew!

CruisePlus Tip #1: When going on excursions pack light. Bring a 500ml bottle of water each and a light jacket. If you need something trust me, you will be able to find it in Peru.

CruisePlus Tip #2: Bathrooms are not always common at archaeological sites such as the pyramids or Chan Chan.

CruisePlus Tip #3: Learn to barter. You may think you are taking advantage of the vendors by bartering away less than a dollar but bartering is expected and strongly encouraged.

Things to See & Do

Mercado (Markets): A fanstatic way to taste local culture. The Mercado in the city centre features hundreds of vendors.

Chan Chan (In Mochica dialect: Janj-Janj, Sun-Sun): Located 10 minutes by taxi outside of the city center, Chan Chan is an extremely well preserved ancient capital and is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. This marvel will simply wow you! Be warned there are no public restrooms onsite or nearby.

Huaca del Sol Pyramid: Located 15 minutes by taxi outside of the city center. This is a must see!

Church of El Carmen: Built in 1759, the El Carmen is without a doubt one of the most beautiful buildings within the city limits. The monastery within the grounds contains hundreds of 17th century paintings and works of arts.

Restaurants

Rincon de Vallejo

Instead of the local cuisine Rincon de Vallejo serves classics from the highlands. The restaurant itself is known for Peru’s famous poet Cesar Vallejo. You can read his poems (along with English translations) on the walls.

Address: Orbegoso 300 (corner of San Martin)

El Cheff

The food is simple, cheap and delicious. Don’t be expecting too much for ambience and the staff speak no English but the menu clearly states chicken or goat.
