Cabo San Lucas – The Marlin Capital of the World
Located at the most southerly tip of the Baja California Sur lays a very popular resort town that is a favourite amongst celebrities, sport fishermen and golfers alike. Cabo San Lucas is world renowned for its casual atmosphere and exciting nightlife.
What really excites me about this little city is that there is most certainly something there for everyone…unless you aren’t into golf, beaches, pampering resorts, scuba diving, fishing, shopping, desert-meets-ocean type scenic beauty…ok well you get the point, it’s hard not to fall in love with Cabo San Lucas.
Beaches
So let’s talk beaches. With miles of white sand beaches around the area it’s always nice to know where to go for the action (or seclusion depending on your style) and the best views that will make you forget about home.
Playa El Médano is Cabo San Lucas’ main beach and the best beach for swimming. Medano stretches for 2 miles starting from the east side of the marina through Cabo San Lucas to Villa de Palmar. It offers great views of Land’s End, a large cluster of rock formations carved by wind and sea.
Located
near Land’s End, Lover’s Beach is a widely
popular and much loved beach as it offers the best views of El Arco (the widely photographed Arch of Poseidon). It offers dramatic views that capture the Sea of Cortez
meeting the wild Pacific Ocean. This beach is
not easily accessed and is best to arrive by water. You can hire a water taxi
to take you out. If you are a diver, the areas around the arch are some
fantastic scuba diving spots to spot lots of tropical fish! You’ll also get a
great view of Los Frailles – two rock formations frequented by sea lions. Swimming
can be dangerous due to powerful waves and currents so it is recommended that you
swim only on the Sea
of Cortez side of Lover’s
Beach.
No longer in love? Perhaps you need to mosey on over to Divorce Beach. This beach is a stretch of white sand located on the Pacific side – just a short walk from Lover’s Beach. It is not recommended for swimming.
A great place for some seclusion is Playa las Viudas (Widow’s Beach). Formerly known as Twin Dolphin beach, this beach is known for its otherworldly volcanic rock formations, tidal pools, and relative seclusion.
Dining and Nightlife
The dining experience in Cabo San Lucas is definitely one to try. You can enjoy anything from traditional Mexican restaurants to fine European, American, and pan-Asian cuisines. The fusion of spices will excite your palette!
As I mentioned earlier, Cabo San Lucas is known for its nightlife. There is an endless list of restaurants and bars for you to enjoy, including the very famous Cabo Wabo Cantina Restaurant and Bar, owned by Sammy Hagar of Van Halen. You might even catch him there as he usually plays at least once a year around his birthday - October 13 for anyone taking notes.
Golf
Cabo San Lucas is practically rain-free for 11 months of the year, which makes it a golfer’s paradise! With six signature golf courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Trent Jones, and Dye Corporation, you’ll find yourself continually challenged and taking in the beauty of the views of the Sea of Cortez. The golf courses are all situated within the Los Cabo municipality and most can be found in the Corridor (the highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo) where most of the area’s expansive resorts are located. Because of the desert area, the gold courses can be comparable to courses found in Arizona and California.
Whale Watching
A little tip for anyone interested in whale watching, Cabo San Lucas is a prime location to view the behemoth grey whales as they winter and calve in the protected shallow lagoons. January through March is most certainly your best time frame to spot these magnificent creatures before they begin their migration home to the northern Bering Sea.
Fishing
As you read in the title, Cabo is the Marlin capital of the world. There is, of course, unbelievable sport fishing. There are numerous charter companies that will gladly take you out on any sized vessels, including 60 yachts if that’s what you fancy! The typical fish you’ll be reeling in are Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, and Dorado. Unlike other fishing locales, the abundance of fish makes it common for fisherman to come home with a catch the first time out.
The Final Word…
There is so much more to talk about when I think of Cabo San Lucas. It truly is a place of endless possibilities. The resort town has sprung into popularity over the past 20 years and, in the end, there’s no wonder why! Now I am going to have to direct my attention back to the other ins and outs of my work…fighting the urge to daydream about the warm ocean breeze and easy living found in Cabo San Lucas. Wish me luck!
